Magaret Thompson, proud Grandmother, sent me these pictures of Sophie Rose who arrived on the 30th January, in the right corner, weighing in at 8lbs 2 oz:

Theatre and Music

April 14 Ethel gave me a ticket to see Edward Albee's "The Lady from Dubuque". The play was powerfully acted by as strong cast but, however much I concentrated, I was unable make any sense of the work at all. Cruelties and obscenities shouted at each other seemed to have very little to do with human friendship--especially, as one of the friends was dying very painfully. The only parallel in life I could think of was the paparazzi harassing the dying Jackie Onassis. The appearance of two ghosts just added to my confusion.

March 22 Saw a neat piece of original theatre--The Irish Repertory Theatre's production of "Give Me Your Hand" by Paul Durcan.

Poet, Paul Durcan's work was not known to us and, indeed, is not represented at the local library or Barnes and Noble, but there is no doubt about his power of observation and his ability to draw powerful word images from it in down-to earth language; many very funny, some poignant.

He got his inspiration for the collection of poems from paintings in the National Gallery of London and, in it, he translates the expressions and body language of the Medieval to 18th century subjects into present-day attitudes.

While each painting is projected onto a large screen, two accomplished actors read the work--Dermot Crowley, who brought the idea to the stage and Dearbhla Molloy--both with wonderful diction and changes of accent. Not a word was lost!

March 14 A wonderful theatre experience! We were lucky enough to get tickets for the Irish Repertory Theatre performance of Eugene O'Neill's "Beyond the Horizon".

Written in 1920, it is a harrowing tale of two farming sons and the girl next door. Robert, the younger son, is a daydreamer and sickly from birth, whereas Andrew is robust and down-to earth. Lucas Hall played Robert and he gave a heart-rending portrayal of a young dreamer whose life is slowly disintegrating and is tearing apart all the loved ones surrounding him. These include Andrew, played by Rod Brogan and Ruth played by Wrenn Schmidt. Both supurb actors, their portrayals heightened the drama to the almost unbearable.

The supporting cast played their parts convincingly--even little infant Mary, played by Aimee Laurence. NOT TO BE MISSED.
